KS served as the prime consultant for this corridor improvement project for the Ohio Department of Transportation District 3. The project extends north from I-80 / Ohio Turnpike to I-90 in the City of Elyria and Elyria Township, Lorain County, Ohio. This heavily traveled route experienced accidents for several years. Travelers were confounded by the traffic pattern in this area, which required drivers to cross SR-57 via the 49th Street Bridge.
The purpose of the project was to more safely and efficiently move traffic, to improve connectivity for residents and businesses, and to accommodate future needs of the corridor.
In July 2009, KS completed a Preliminary Engineering Study, providing ODOT with a cost estimate, conceptual plans, maintenance of traffic plans, geotechnical investigation, and environmental studies for the preferred alternative. Recommended improvements included widening SR-57 to three lanes in each direction, constructing two at-grade signalized intersections at Midway Boulevard and Griswold Road, removing the 49th Street Bridge, and removing loop ramps at I-90 – replacing them with a full diamond interchange.
The project broke ground on July 1, 2014, and was completed in 2016. KS was also retained to provide engineering services during construction.
