ACEC 2018 Engineering Excellence Award

KS Associates received an Honor Award in the 2018 Engineering Excellence Awards competition sponsored by the American Council of Engineering Companies of Ohio (ACEC Ohio). KS Associates’ entry, the LOR-57-19.42 Corridor Improvement, a major $22 million roadway reconfiguration, was recognized for its complexity, innovation, and benefit to the traveling public. KS Associates was the lead engineering consultant for the project, under contract with the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) District 3.

In this year’s competition, 28 projects were recognized, giving the engineering firms behind those projects well-deserved public recognition. “KS Associates is honored to be among an elite group of engineering firms recognized for designing modern, efficient, and reliable infrastructure that our state and local communities urgently need. The LOR-57-19.42 project provides the City of Elyria with the infrastructure it needs to re-develop an important corridor within the City, vital to its economy, while improving safety and mobility,” said Lynn S. Miggins, P.E., president of KS Associates.

The LOR-57-19.42 improvement commences at SR-57 and the Ohio Turnpike and extends north to the I-90 interchange with SR-57. Located within the project limits is the Midway Mall Business District. The original configuration of the SR-57 corridor made it difficult for drivers to access retail and commercial establishments in the district. Also, this area had one of the highest incidences of crashes in Ohio.

KS Associates’ design widened SR-57 from two to three lanes in each direction; added two signalized intersections; removed the 49th Street Bridge; and replaced loop ramps at I-90 with a full-diamond interchange. The project was one of the first projects in Ohio to use a radar detection system with adaptive signal timing.

Congratulations to our friends and teaming partners who also won awards in the competition. To read about the other winners, visit the ACEC Ohio web site.
