KS Provides Bridge Inspection for Historical Bridge in Cleveland - Detroit Superior Bridge, ODOT District 12

The Detroit Superior Bridge (CUY-6-1456) was the first fixed high-level bridge in Cleveland, and the third high level bridge above the Cuyahoga River. At its completion, the bridge was the largest steel and concrete reinforced bridge in the world.

Members of KS's bridge team had the opportunity to provide an in-depth fracture critical inspection of the bridge Work involved inspecting the entire length of the structure including areas under West 25th Street and the west and east approach spans; sounding portions of the concrete structure that visibly appeared to be unsound or deteriorated; inspecting the confined-space portions of the structure below the lower deck at the west side of the structure utilizing a gas detector and emergency air for entry; and using articulated arm lifts on the lower deck to inspect the main deck structural members, pinned joints, and concrete columns and arches.

KS documented the changes in previously mounted crack monitors on the concrete portion of the structure.

The Fractural Critical Inspections involved climbing the superstructure trusses to afford the arm’s length visual inspections of all truss members.

KS Associates provided services as a subconsultant to Jones-Stuckey Ltd. under the ODOT VAR D12 BI 2014 Project.
