KS Associates designed two phases of a water main replacement project for the City of Elyria in the Eastern Heights Neighborhood. The goals of the project were to improve the reliability of the water distribution system, assure the quality of the water being delivered to the tap, and provide adequate capacity for both typical usage and fire flows. To accomplish these goals, KS Associates worked with the City to devise a plan to replace water mains that were aged and corroded with new reliable pipelines, to upsize 4- and 6-inch water mains to a minimum pipeline diameter of 8 inches, and to loop dead-end water mains.
In the preliminary design phase, KS Associates worked with the City to determine the preferred location for new water mains and to assess the challenges and risks posed by construction.
Phase One consisted of 10,000 linear feet of 8-inch water main and 248 new service connections, with hydrants and valves as required along seven streets. Phase Two consisted of approximately 4,800 linear feet of 8-inch water main and 144 new service connections with hydrants and valves as required.
KS Associates contacted all private and public utilities having facilities in the area and was diligent about insisting that utilities field mark their lines for improved accuracy. Gas lines in particular present a challenge – our persistence with Columbia Gas resulted in the utility providing complete field markings.
Construction of Phase 1 was completed in 2014 and Phase 2 was completed in 2015.
