As part of National Surveyors Week (March 15-21, 2026), KS Associates took the opportunity to engage with Elyria High School students on Tuesday, March 17, 2026. Mark Yeager, P.S., KS Director of Surveying Services, delivered an engaging and informative presentation that introduced students to the vital role surveyors play in shaping the world.
Mark walked students through the fundamentals of land surveying, explaining how surveyors serve as the foundation of nearly every infrastructure project — from roads and bridges to buildings and waterfront developments. He emphasized that before design and construction can begin, surveyors provide critical data for design.
The presentation highlighted the many types of surveying, including boundary, topographic, construction layout, and hydrographic surveying. Mark also brought the profession to life by describing the diverse environments surveyors work in, from urban job sites and transportation corridors to shorelines, waterways, and undeveloped land.
Students were given an overview of the advanced technology used in the field. Mark discussed modern equipment such as robotic total stations, GPS/GNSS systems, and 3D laser scanners, explaining how these tools allow even one-person crews to capture precise data and create detailed digital models of real-world conditions.
He also outlined the pathway to becoming a Professional Surveyor (P.S.), including education requirements, hands-on experience, and the licensure process. By breaking down the steps, Mark helped students see surveying not just as a job, but as a rewarding and attainable career path with long-term growth opportunities.
In a moment no one in the room will soon forget, the presentation was briefly interrupted by a loud boom, later identified as the Cleveland Meteor. This was an unexpected twist to an already memorable visit.
KS extends a sincere thank you to Mark for representing the firm and for taking the time to inspire the next generation of potential surveyors. His enthusiasm and expertise helped shine a light on a profession that is essential to building and maintaining our communities.
