KS Associates provided surveying and 3D laser scanning services as a subconsultant to lead design firm CHA Consulting, Inc. for this ODOT District 12 bridge deck replacement project. The project involves replacing the deck on the ramp carrying IR-71/SR-176 northbound to IR-90 westbound over IR-490 in Cleveland. KS Associates provided reliable existing-conditions data within a complex, high-volume interstate interchange.
KS surveyors established Type A and Type B survey control monuments. Surveyors positioned the monuments so they could be used for the design survey and remain in use during construction. The topographic survey and base map covered several thousands of feet of roadway leading up to the bridge and around the structure. The survey documented the bridge, roadway infrastructure, and surrounding grades. Collecting survey data in a high-volume interchange presents several challenges, complicated by active roadways below and above the bridge. KS Associates used a terrestrial-based 3D laser scanner to collect accurate survey data of the bridge superstructure. This included the abutments, piers, beams, and deck, and critical clearances to the overhead bridge structures. 3D laser scanning allowed the efficient capture of dense, accurate data in difficult-to-access areas. The use of 3D laser scanning also improved safety to surveyors working near live traffic, and minimized impacts to motorists by eliminating the need for lane closures.
The project also required the re-establishment the roadway centerline geometry. KS Associates recovered and surveyed street centerline monuments referenced in the original 1964 interchange plans. Although these monuments were located well outside the bridge limits, surveyors verified their positions and determined they provided reliable control for re-establishing the roadway centerline geometry through the project area.
Construction of this major transportation preservation project is anticipated to be complete in 2029.
